The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has introduced a national SMS Sender ID (aka Alpha Tags) Register as part of the government's Fighting Scams initiative, designed to stop scammers impersonating trusted brands via SMS.
From 1 July, 2026, all SMS Sender IDs used for sending messages to Australian mobile numbers must be registered and approved by ACMA. Unregistered Sender IDs will be labelled 'Unverified' or blocked. These are mandatory regulatory changes that Traffio, like all Australian businesses using branded SMS, must comply with.
For context, with this change, to continue to offer you individual SMS Sender IDs, Traffio would need to register as a telecommunication organisation. Rather than pursuing a costly, complex and compliance heavy process, we've focused our energy on building a better solution: A FREE, in-app messaging tool that gives you the same reach without the SMS costs.
Below outlines the upcoming changes.
Individual SMS Sender IDs will no longer be supported from 1 July 2026
Traffio currently supports customers to send SMS messages under their own custom SMS Sender IDs (business names). Due to the ACMA registration requirements, we are consolidating all outbound SMS under the single registered sender ID: Traffio (this means we are sending on behalf of you as one business).

To ensure your messages are clearly identifiable as coming from your business, Traffio will include additional identifying information within the message body so your field workers know the communication is from you.
Individual SMS Sender IDs will be switched off 11.59 pm 30 June 2026
Important note: Job request texts are not affected Text messages sent for job requests are unaffected. These are sent from individual mobile numbers (not SMS Sender IDs) because field workers need to be able to reply.
The SMS Sender ID Register only applies to alphanumeric sender IDs, not messages sent from standard mobile numbers.
Traffio In-App Messaging release is imminent
Our development team are close to completing the new in-app one-way broadcast messaging tool.
This will replace the SMS blast functionality. Your field workers will receive messages directly through an inbox in the Traffio mobile app, including notifications, meaning they will be alerted in the same way as an SMS, and will receive the same communications. It’s just inside the Traffio mobile app.
This is at no charge to you. Saving you fees on SMS.
The Traffio SMS Messaging Tool will no longer be accessible from11.59 pm, 30 June, 2026. The one-way SMS blast tool used to send bulk messages to field workers will be switched off and no longer accessible from 11.59 pm, 30 June, 2026.This is a direct consequence of the new requirements of ACMA.
What’s next?
There is a Knowledge Base article available >>HERE<< to help you understand the new changes and how to move forward. We are also adding a pop up into the Traffio mobile app to notify all users about these changes. As a note, the user will need to swipe away or close the notification. Once they do it will no pop up again.
