Strathcona Girls Grammar April Work Experience Wrap-Up

Written by Carmen Wu.

On April 13 for one week, Erin and I, had the opportunity to get a taste of what the work place environment within a professional team was like.

Both currently in year 10 and interested in exploring different career pathways, we took we took the opportunity to complete an internship at Traffio to gain real-world experience and develop our skills in a professional environment.

Completing our internship at Traffio was both an exciting and rewarding experience, giving us the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally in a real-world work environment.

From the very beginning, we were warmly welcomed by the supportive Traffio team as they encouraged us to learn collaboratively.

To the right is the lunch photo we took on our first day, showing the whole team gathered at the restaurant, we felt very excited and welcomed to begin the experience together.

My Experience

During my internship, I focused on marketing. I had the chance to contribute to a variety of tasks that supported the company’s outreach and communication efforts.

Working alongside Tara, our experienced head of global marketing, has taught me essential skills like creativity, adaptability, and problem solving. I have met so many great people who supported me along the way. I am especially grateful for Tara for her support throughout my internship, and a special shoutout to Ruba, who is pictured here.

My job duties involved marketing initiatives, contributing ideas to projects and  connecting with customers. I gained a deeper understanding of how businesses engage with their audience, how to effectively convey the message to customers, and how to tailor content to meet customer needs.

Throughout the week, I worked across different areas of marketing from updating the website to creating social media posts. I also had the opportunity to sit in on international meetings, which gave me insight to how teams collaborate on a global scale, an interview for the new marketing role and the full team global meeting.

Overall, my internship at Traffio has been an incredibly valuable experience. Being able to focus on the has given me a versatile insight of the company and the marketing industry as a whole. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity, and I look forward to applying the skills I've learnt in the future. And now it's time to hear about Erin's experience!

Erin's Experience

Strathcona's other intern Erin, completed her work experience with Traffio's Development team. Erin worked through a structured programming challenge. When asked what she liked about the work she was doing, she said. "I was able to gain a deeper understanding of both the technical and practical aspects of web development".

On her first day at Traffio, she started off with setting up her development environment where she had full access to the traffio website, allowing her to add codes that directly affected the Traffio website. This meant she could safely experiment with the website and see how her changes affected the website without impacting the live version.

Below are some tasks she did throughout her development internship experience at Traffio.

On the second day, she began working on her programmer challenge. She focused on setting up the foundation code that were being used for future stages. In part 2, she implemented logic to ensure users could only access the correct data from the database, preventing unauthorised data retrieval.

Later on in the week, she built the visual side of the website to display the data she built in part 1. She then progressed to part 6, which involved repeating earlier steps but applying to the dataset.

In the end she tested the code the make sure it didn’t allow invalid data to enter the data base, such as not entering a required field, as well as enhancing the visuals of the website.

She was able to successfully contribute to the project by working collaboratively on different tasks and sharing ideas throughout the process.

Overall, our time at Traffio was fun, educational and enjoyable. For any of our other students who have thought about work experience, it is worth it!

Signing off,

Carmen Wu.
